KOTA KINABALU: A total of 285 illegal immigrants, including infants, were deported from Lahad Datu, Sabah, to the Philippines, says the state Immigration Department.

The deportees had served their respective sentences and were sent back to their home country via the Lahad Datu Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex to Baguio Port.

“These Filipinos were detained at the Kota Kinabalu and Papar depots before deportation,” the department said in a statement yesterday.

The latest deportation exercise, conducted on Thursday, involved 129 men, 71 women and 85 children, bringing the total number of Filipinos deported so far this year to 4,288.

The department said children among the deportees were accompanied by their parents or guardians, in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Besides Filipinos, those deported so far this year included 1,789 Indonesians, 137 Pakistanis, 141 Chinese nationals, 29 Vietnamese nationals and 33 people of other nationalities.

“This brings the total number of deportees to 6,417,” it said.

The department added that deportees who had served their sentences were in possession of travel documents.
