One dead, one injured after suspected drunk driver hits DBKL contract team

KUALA LUMPUR: A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) contract worker was killed and another injured after being struck by a car driven by a suspected drunk driver along the Sultan Iskandar Highway early Saturday morning (Oct 24).

The incident occurred at around 5.00am as the workers were packing up their equipment after installing road warning signs on the stretch leading from Jalan Damansara toward Jalan Parlimen.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said a preliminary probe revealed that the car, driven by a 26-year-old local man, lost control and skidded before hitting two workers standing in the left lane.

"One of the victims, a 28-year-old supervisor, died while receiving treatment. The second victim, a 49-year-old maintenance lorry driver, suffered head and right-hand injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital," ACP Mohd Zamzuri said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 24).

The two were part of a five-man team, which included three Bangladeshi workers, contracted by the City Hall to install warning signs between 11.00pm Friday and 4.00am Saturday.

The driver of the car escaped unhurt. However, a breathalyser test administered at the scene returned an alcohol reading of 64mg/100ml.

"The driver has been remanded for three days until Oct 26 to assist in investigations," ACP Mohd Zamzuri added.

The case is being investigated under Sections 44(1)(b) and 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence causing death and injury.

Police have urged witnesses or anyone with information regarding the crash to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or report to the nearest police station.
