Foreigners nabbed at KLIA

SEPANG: Two men from Uzbekistan and Nigeria have been detained for bringing in drugs worth RM2.93mil in two separate incidents at the KL International Airport (KLIA).

KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said in the first incident last Friday, a 50-year-old man had arrived from Uzbekistan capital Tashkent.

“A scan revealed some suspicious images in his bag.

“We did a thorough check on some items, including seven coffee packets.

“Instead of coffee powder, the packets contained methamphetamine with a market value of RM2.73mil,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

In the second case on Saturday, a 36-year-old Nigerian man who had arrived at the airport from Lagos via Doha at 4.20pm was stopped after Customs officers carried out a surveillance on him.

When a full check was made on his bags, the officers discovered a hidden compartment at the back of the bag filled with 1.4kg of methamphetamine worth about RM197,000.

On drug seizures at the airport, Chik Omar said the KLIA Customs Department had foiled 12 drug smuggling attempts involving 248kg of various types of drugs worth more than RM43mil.
