Memorisation matters


As the world evolves, the educational landscape naturally evolves as well, exposing students to the latest digital interfaces.

When I was a student, the prevailing teaching paradigms were anchored in rote memorisation and the traditional grammar-translation method. By the time I entered university, hybrid, asynchronous and peer learning were heralded as the next frontier.

During my postgraduate studies, augmented reality and gamification emerged as the next educational frontier, with many arguing that Malaysia needed to accelerate the adoption of these technologies.

Now, as a lecturer on the ground, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly prominent feature of contemporary education, essentially operating as an omnipresent, hyper-efficient partner in real-time information retrieval and processing.

This rapid migration raises a critical question: in our enthusiasm to embrace digital transformation, are we maintaining a sufficient safeguard on the cognitive foundations of learning?

Some classic methodologies deserve preservation. Most notably, the deliberate act of mental retention. While rote memorisation is frequently criticised for failing to produce spontaneous conversational fluency, it remains an important mechanism for developing a student’s foundational vocabulary. Without it, learners lack the linguistic raw material required to build complex thoughts.

Admittedly, the downside of old-school drilling is evident when applied poorly to oral skills. It often produces a rigid, mechanical performance where a learner forcefully inserts sophisticated lexical choices purely to satisfy a marking rubric, prioritising administrative metrics over genuine communication.

We see the legacy of this in highly predictable classroom exchanges, where conversational scripts are rehearsed for compliance rather than internalised for genuine, spontaneous communication. When applied in isolation, memorisation creates speakers who are either terrified of spontaneous dialogue or entirely dependent on a pre-packaged format.

However, rejecting memory altogether is an equally dangerous extreme. Cultivating a robust memory is the brain’s ultimate defence mechanism, particularly because constant access to technology is never guaranteed.

The ultimate proving ground remains the examination hall, where students enter with nothing but pens, rulers, and their accumulated knowledge and understanding. This highlights a critical divergence within contemporary education: when formative coursework occurs in an open, digitally-assisted environment, it can inadvertently obscure how effectively a student internalises knowledge for independent recall under summative conditions.

This stark divide leads to an uncomfortable question currently confronting educators: Is this growing reliance on digital shortcuts linked to a reduced emphasis on memory retention, or have we transitioned into a broader digital ecosystem where committing information to memory increasingly feels redundant?

As AI-powered tools and search engines become increasingly integrated into daily life, students can retrieve information, generate summaries and obtain explanations within seconds. While convenient, this may reduce the need to actively retain information over extended periods.

Consequently, some students may experience greater anxiety when entering examination settings that require independent recall and application of knowledge. In such situations, the pressure to rely on unauthorised assistance may intensify.

This is not necessarily due to a lack of capability, but because a systemic dependency on external data leaves students underprepared for the cognitive isolation of the examination hall. If our learning environments inadvertently minimise the value of memory and independent thinking, we risk guiding students towards external dependencies rather than genuine cognitive mastery.

What is needed today is a brand-new paradigm that honours both traditional rigour and modern innovation with assessments designed to focus on evaluating how students process and internalise knowledge.
