UTeM to develop M’sia’s quantum computing talent

COMPUTING is evolving rapidly, with quantum computing emerging as a next-generation technology designed to tackle complex problems beyond the capabilities of conventional computers.

In response to the need to develop talent in this growing field, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) is offering the country’s first Bachelor of Computer Science (Quantum Computing Technology) programme.

UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said the first cohort, expected to comprise 60 students, will begin their studies soon and is set to graduate in 2030.

To support the programme, UTeM has set up the country’s first dedicated physical laboratory for quantum computing teaching, learning and research.

The laboratory is equipped with 23 quantum computers with two- and three-qubit capacities, allowing students to conduct experiments and gain hands-on training with the technology.

To strengthen its position as a regional quantum technology education hub, UTeM has also expanded its international collaboration network with the United States through partnerships with three universities: the University at Buffalo, the University at Albany and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Massila, who recently conducted a working visit to the US, said the strategic collaborations aim to strengthen curriculum development, research, talent development, academic mobility and knowledge exchange in quantum computing.

The visit also included discussions with the universities on exploring long-term collaboration opportunities in the field.

Massila said the new programme was developed to produce graduates with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in quantum computing, while meeting the country’s growing demand for experts in this rapidly expanding strategic technology field globally.

“It aligns with the technical and vocational education and training approach by emphasising practical-based learning, problem-solving and industry applications to ensure graduates possess high competencies and meet the needs of the country’s technology sector,” she said.
