A TOTAL of 32 researchers affiliated with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) have been recognised among the World’s Top 5% of Scientists in the SciRank Global 2025 registry.
Engineering and related sciences researchers make up 27 of the cohort, including 18 from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science and nine from the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology.
The remaining researchers comprise three from the Faculty of Science, and one each from the Faculty of Accountancy and Management and the M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
This distribution points to particular depth in engineering-based research while also showing that UTAR-linked scholarship represented in the registry extends into business, the natural sciences and healthcare, said the varsity in an Aug 5 press release.
“Spanning accountancy and management, engineering, green technology, science, and medicine and health sciences, the recognition highlights the breadth of research connected to the university,” it said.
SciRank Global evaluates researchers using its normalised composite score, which compares scholarly output and citation impact across disciplines. To qualify for assessment, researchers must have at least 10 verified scholarly works in their OpenAlex profiles.
UTAR said the field-normalised approach used by SciRank seeks to account for differences in publication and citation patterns between disciplines, rather than relying on raw citation totals alone.
“This is particularly relevant to a multidisciplinary university, where research contributions may range from environmental engineering, renewable energy and advanced materials to data science, health, medicine, business and the natural sciences,” it said.
The varsity noted that as with other bibliometric exercises, the registry offers one lens through which research activity can be viewed.
“Citation-based indicators do not replace peer review or assessments of the quality and social value of individual studies, but they can provide a comparable measure of how widely scholarly work is being referenced within and beyond its field,” it said.
It added that the inclusion of 32 names in the 2025 registry provides an external bibliometric indication of the visibility and citation reach of research associated with UTAR.
