Build your next career shift

At the University of Cyberjaya, the DBA combines coursework in areas such as digital business strategy, strategic management and business research methods with a research thesis.

EVERY career hits a moment where experience alone feels like it has run its course. As a working professional, you might find yourself eyeing a higher-level role that demands a different kind of authority, dreaming of a bold shift into a new field, or constantly wrestling with complex challenges at work that your current toolkit simply can't solve.

Postgraduate study offers a meaningful way forward – giving you the space, structure and expert guidance to reinvent how you think and work.

Yet, because every professional’s journey is uniquely personal, the right academic path depends entirely on the future you envision for yourself.

Taking the time to align your choices with your personal values ensures that your growth is not just professional, but deeply fulfilling.

In the end, going back to study is less about adding a credential to your resume and more about unlocking the next version of who you can become.

Research-oriented

A professional doctorate such as the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is designed for experienced professionals who want to examine real organisational challenges through advanced academic research.

At the University of Cyberjaya (UOC), the DBA combines coursework in areas such as digital business strategy, strategic management and business research methods with a research thesis.

“For experienced professionals, postgraduate study can be an opportunity to turn years of workplace experience into deeper expertise and more strategic thinking,” says Priya.

The programme can be pursued full-time or part-time, providing flexibility for professionals balancing postgraduate study with their careers.

“For experienced professionals, postgraduate study can be an opportunity to turn years of workplace experience into deeper expertise and more strategic thinking,” says UOC Faculty of Business and Technology dean Assoc Prof Dr Priya Sukirthanandan.

“A DBA provides a space to examine real organisational challenges critically, develop evidence-based solutions and strengthen the leadership capabilities needed to navigate increasingly complex business environments,” she shares.

The distinction is important: a DBA is not simply about learning more business theory. It is about using research to investigate problems relevant to professional practice, with potential applications to organisations, leadership and decision-making.

Driving innovation

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) takes a different route. Its focus is on generating new knowledge through original research, often centred on a specific question within a chosen field.

UOC PhD researcher, Muhammad Redza's postgraduate journey has extended beyond the laboratory at UOC. Muhammad Redza (centre) was also awarded an Asean–India fellowship, through which he undertook extensive research training and laboratory work in India.

At UOC, postgraduate researchers work with academic supervisors throughout the research journey, from developing a proposal and conducting studies to presenting findings and contributing to the wider research community.

Research areas span medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical research, psychology, information and communications technology (ICT), data science, business and digital transformation.

PhD researcher Muhammad Redza Fahmi Mod Razif, for example, is investigating a nanotechnology-based approach to improving the delivery of luteolin, a natural compound being studied for its potential relevance to breast cancer research. His work has progressed through multiple studies and publications, illustrating how a focused research question can develop into a broader body of knowledge.

“Postgraduate research is a journey of asking meaningful questions, generating evidence and contributing new knowledge,” says UOC Centre for Graduate Studies director Prof Dr Shamima Abdul Rahman.

“It develops not only expertise in a particular field, but also the ability to think critically, work systematically and communicate findings with scientific integrity.”

Choosing wisely

Whether the goal is career advancement or original research, postgraduate study requires a significant commitment.

Prospective students should consider three questions: “What do I want to achieve?”; “How much time can I commit?”; and, “Does the programme and academic expertise align with my goals?”

For those still weighing their options, UOC’s Open Day on Oct 10 and 11 will include a Postgraduate Coffee Meet, giving prospective students an opportunity to speak directly with academics about their interests, research possibilities and postgraduate pathways.
