PJ Joran open to anglers, with RM21,000 in cash prizes
Nearly 300kg of ikan baung (yellow catfish) weighing between 1kg and 2kg each have been released into Tasik Bandaran Kelana Jaya ahead of the Petaling Jaya Joran 2026 (PJ Joran) fishing competition.
Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Sharinaz Samsudin said the release would add to the fish stock ahead of the competition.
“The release of ikan baung is not only aimed at adding to the stock ahead of the competition, but also making the experience more interesting and challenging for anglers,” she said at the fish release ceremony.
The competition, organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), is returning for its eighth edition.
Held across three lakes, it would take place on Sept 20 from 8.30am to 12.30pm.
“This year, we have opened three lakes to participants, giving them more choices when deciding where to fish and planning their strategy,” she said.
“Tasik Bandaran Kelana Jaya also has various fish species, including patin, jelawat, toman, belida, koi, kap rumput, ikan raja, tilapia, keli and haruan, giving participants a variety of catches.”
Sharinaz said PJ Joran had the potential to be further developed as an annual recreational event attracting participants not only from Selangor, but also from other states.
“We want PJ Joran to continue growing as a recreational and tourism attraction with its own appeal.
“The presence of participants and visitors from outside Petaling Jaya could also benefit the local economy, for instance, through sales at kiosks and stalls on-site,” she said.
The competition offers RM21,000 in total cash prizes.
The champion will receive RM7,000, followed by RM2,000 for the runner-up and RM1,000 for third place.
Those placing fourth and fifth will receive RM400 each, while those finishing sixth to 10th will receive RM200 each.
Participants finishing 11th to 20th will receive RM150 each, while those placing 21st to 100th will receive RM100 each.
Registration is priced at RM60 per rod, with two hooks allowed for each rod.
Early registration is on Sept 19 from 3pm to 7pm, while registration on competition day is open from 6.30am to 8.30am.
A total of 400 T-shirts would also be provided for those who register early.
“We are targeting at least 400 participants, based on the number of T-shirts we have prepared,” Sharinaz said.
“However, based on our experience from previous editions of PJ Joran, the number could reach up to 700 participants,” she added.
Sharinaz also reminded participants to prioritise their health and safety during the competition, in light of the haze.
Also present were Selangor Fisheries Department director Noraisyah Abu Bakar and MBPJ Community Development Department deputy director Ku Mustafa Ku Mohamad.
The PJ Joran fishing competition is being held in collaboration with OAG Worldwide Sdn Bhd and Abu Garcia Fishing.
