SELANGOR government will focus on strengthening the education support system and increasing student participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) under its 2027 budget.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the focus would be on maintaining students’ academic excellence while providing more opportunities for them to engage in STEM and contribute to the community.
He said such efforts were important given that Selangor had about one million students, and enhancing their achievements would significantly impact society and the country.
“In our budget, we will focus on examination results and STEM participation.
“There are also several initiatives we will try to implement so that students can contribute to the community.
“If these one million students achieve excellent results, it will have a positive impact on society,” he told reporters after attending the opening of the Gombak Form Six College and 2026 Academic Excellence Awards ceremony in Gombak, reported Bernama.
On efforts to upgrade school infrastructure, Amirudin said the state was gathering information on the required upgrades before finalising the allocation.
“We will only finalise it around September or October,” he said.
Amirudin also announced the implementation of “Himpunan Pelajar Tingkatan Enam Selangor” (Hipsters) as a platform to support students pursuing higher education.
Under the programme, book vouchers and free Internet data were provided as well to Form Six students.
This year, 10,000 students received book vouchers, an expansion from previous years when the offer was restricted to university students.
Amirudin said the state government was prepared to consider expanding the programme to more Form Six institutions in the future, based on current needs and demand.
