STAMP rally activities are becoming increasingly popular at creative spaces, cafes, malls, arts and cultural events in Penang.
State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said many of these locations had developed their own stamps.
“It gives people a mission to travel. They come with a map, book or even postcards and travel from one checkpoint to another to collect stamps.
“When they arrive to collect a stamp, they are likely to explore the area, try the food and visit nearby attractions to experience the local culture.”
Wong urged more tourism attractions, heritage buildings, cafes and creative businesses to develop their own stamps and interactive activities.
“They can organise stamp hunts, stamp competitions, collector gatherings and even stamp fairs.
“Invite artists to come together and create exclusive stamps that visitors can collect in one place.
“Cafes can also create seasonal stamps. For example, if you visit during Chinese New Year, George Town Festival, Bon Odori or another special season, you may be able to collect a limited- edition stamp.”
He said this would encourage visitors to keep coming back.
While these stamps may look simple, behind each design is an artist, story, location, business and reason for someone to travel, Wong said.
“They might discover parts of Penang that they would otherwise never have visited.”
