students from two Johor schools took their National Day celebrations beyond their school grounds by showcasing a joint cultural performance to the community.
Students from Foon Yew High School Kulai campus and SM Islam Hidayah Johor Baru staged three performances at The Commune Lifestyle Mall, Aeon Mall Kulai and IOI Mall Kulai.
It gave the students from different educational and cultural backgrounds an opportunity to perform, interact and celebrate National Day.
Foon Yew High School students presented a diverse line-up featuring performances by its Campus Songwriting Club, 24 festive drums, choir, wind orchestra, Malay Language Society, and Dance Club.
Meanwhile, students from SM Islam Hidayah added to the celebrations with traditional kompang and zapin performances.
Through music, percussion and dance, the students introduced different cultural traditions to one another while sharing the stage before members of the public.
The collaboration also gave the students an opportunity to work with peers outside their usual school environment and develop greater confidence in communicating and working with others.
For Foon Yew High School, education extends beyond academic achievement.
The school places importance on students’ wider development by providing opportunities for them to participate in cultural, social and community-based experiences.
“Taking the performances out of the school and into public spaces was part of this effort to broaden their learning experiences.
“Rather than learning about Malaysia’s multicultural society only through lessons and school-based activities, the students were able to experience it directly by interacting with peers from a different school.
“The joint programme encouraged them to communicate, cooperate and appreciate cultural differences while working towards a common performance,” the school stated.
“It also allowed students to develop teamwork, adaptability and confidence as they performed before the wider community at three different venues throughout the day.”
