A significant increase in adoption of solar energy across Selangor is expected following introduction of the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP).
The initiative, which came into effect on Jan 1, is expected to further support Selangor’s transition towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
State public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the projection was also driven by the growing number of companies offering solar installation schemes without upfront capital investment.
“Such financing models are expected to encourage wider public adoption of solar technology for residential, commercial and industrial premises.
“The Sustainable Energy Development Authority’s (Seda) website has also listed companies that provide such arrangements,” she noted.
She said building owners would not have additional capital costs, but could benefit from long-term savings through the use of solar energy systems.
Commenting on the current progress of solar energy deployment in Selangor, Jamaliah said 70 government buildings, including local authorities’, had been registered under the scheme.
She said these installations accounted for a combined installed capacity of 5.69MW, of which 2.23MW is generated from the state secretariat building and various district and land office buildings statewide.
“In the private sector, Seda Malaysia’s records indicate that 392.97MW have been generated under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, encompassing commercial, industrial and agricultural consumers”.
She noted there were also private entities generating solar power for self-consumption, without exporting electricity back to the Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) grid.
She said this when concluding the debate on the Selangor Resilience Strengthening Package (PPDTS) during the Selangor state assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam.
Jamaliah also said Selangor was developing the Government Green Energy (GGE) project through a collaboration between TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd (TRE) and Worldwide Holdings Bhd.
“The initiative aims to expand utilisation of solar energy across government facilities through the development of a large-scale solar farm in Hulu Bernam.
“The GGE project is expected to generate up to 100MW of capacity and is targeted for commissioning by 2028.”
Jamaliah added that implementation of the project was expected to increase the use of renewable energy in state government operations, reduce dependence on conventional electricity supply and support carbon emission reduction efforts in line with the state’s low-carbon development agenda.
