FOR futsal players in PJS 1 of Petaling Jaya, Selangor, heavy rain no longer means the end of a game.

The completion of a new covered futsal court at Dataran Anak Muda has turned a weathered, open-air pitch into a year-round hub for the community.

To 17-year-old Shafuan Hairul Azhar, the upgrade is long-awaited.

As captain of local futsal team “Blok Bois”, he recalled many practice sessions cut short by rain or hindered by the old court’s deteriorating surface.

“The condition of the open-air court was not ideal. There were uneven patches all over the surface,” said the SMK Sultan Abdul Samad student.

“We still practised there, but we would always have to run for shelter when it rained.

“Now, we can train together whenever we want,” he added happily.

Launched by Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Zahri Samingon, the RM790,000 project is part of Petaling Jaya City Council’s (MBPJ) broader mission to provide high-quality, inclusive recreational spaces.

The mayor said the facility was expected to benefit nearly 90,000 residents in the surrounding area.

“This achievement results from a continuous five-year commitment by councillor for Zone 17, Norah Mansor,” he said.

“This platform encourages a healthy lifestyle and strengthens social interaction within the local community,” Mohamad Zahri added.

Norah described the project as a victory for residents advocacy.

“From an open court to a roofed facility, this project has finally come to fruition.

“It proves that stakeholders’ voices are being heard.

“This isn’t just for sports; it’s about fostering deeper relationships within our neighbourhood,” she said.
