DURING her visit to an exhibition at a Johor Baru mall, a home-based baker paid a cash deposit to buy a built-in induction cooker.
“It was priced at RM3,999 and I paid RM2,000 as a deposit,” Norhasyimah Mohd Ibrahim (pic) said outside the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal.
The 41-year-old claimant said the salesperson told her she could get either a free three-tier steamer or a set of four cooking pots for an additional RM1.
Norhasyimah said she signed up to buy the cooker on May 2 as the salesperson claimed it did not consume much electricity and was affordably priced.
She arranged to have the cooker delivered to her home in Pontian, and the salesperson said it would be installed in mid-May.
“Later when I checked online, I found that a three-coil induction cooker was priced from RM900 to RM1,000.”
The claimant said online product reviews indicated that most users had experienced a hike in their monthly electricity bills.
She said the cooker was distributed by a supplier in Shah Alam, Selangor, which had a branch in Johor Baru.
“I decided not to proceed with the purchase and went to the local outlet on May 3 to cancel my order.”
However, Norhasyimah said the staff told her the RM2,000 deposit was non-refundable.
“I told them I was entitled to get my deposit back as the cancellation was made the next day.”
Norhasyimah said she filed a case with the Tribunal as it had been clearly stated in the terms and conditions that customers could cancel their purchases within seven days.
Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM2,000 to the claimant within two weeks.
