WORKS to rejuvenate Pekan Lama Rawang is slated to begin next year, following the completion of a study on the old town’s future.
Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) president Shahman Jalaludin said a consultant would be appointed in October to prepare the plan.
The consultant would use residents and traders’ feedback, including input from an Aug 15 town hall, to draw up proposals.
“We will turn all the information collected into the terms of reference before appointing the consultant.
“The consultant will then design the new Pekan Lama Rawang.
“We want to bring this town back to life,” he said after the full board meeting at Bangunan Lama MPS in Bandar Baru Selayang yesterday.
MPS has allocated RM200,000 for the study.
Shahman said the consultant was expected to make a presentation about two to three months after its appointment.
While the implementation timeline depended on the study’s findings, he said improvement works could start next year.
He added that proposals made during the town hall included reorganising traffic flow, repainting old buildings and standardising business signboards.
Residents had also suggested creating pocket parks and improving landscaping.
Further engagement sessions with residents and traders would be held this month and in September before the consultant’s appointment.
On another matter, Shahman said MPS would hold its first smart city seminar on Sept 15 to explore, among others, the practical use of artificial intelligence in urban planning and municipal management.
The seminar at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Bukit Kiara is expected to draw about 400 participants.
Shahman said the programme would bring together experts from different sectors to discuss technologies that could be applied by local authorities.
“One of the objectives is to explore the practical application of AI in urban planning and management, as well as sharing best practices and the latest technologies.
“We also want to discuss the challenges and mechanisms involved in implementing smart initiatives.”
He said the seminar would also focus on strengthening cooperation between local authorities, government agencies, academia and the private sector.
