A total of 189 members of the Penang Youth Volunteer programme were recently honoured for their service, which among others included distributing water during supply cuts, cleaning neighbourhoods and driving community recycling efforts.

The appreciation ceremony marked a major milestone as the programme reached 10,000 registered members, after its launch in March 2020.

Penang youth and sports committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the achievement reflected a growing community of young people committed to serving society.

“Today’s achievement of 10,000 registered members is more than just a number.

“It represents a community of caring and responsible young people who are prepared to step forward whenever society needs them,” he said at the ceremony.

The programme has mobilised volunteers for disaster relief, environmental conservation, education, healthcare, sports, arts, cultural and community initiatives.

Among those recognised was top recipient Zahir Yaacob, who logged almost 294 hours of volunteer service between June last year and May this year.

The 34-year-old technician, who joined the programme in 2023, said he had taken part in recycling campaigns, gotong-royong activities and water distribution efforts during Penang’s water supply disruptions, mostly on weekends.

He added that he usually learnt about volunteer activities through social media groups.

Gooi said Zahir’s dedication should inspire more young people to embrace volunteerism.

Gooi also said that a volunteer’s contribution should not be measured solely by hours served.

“It lies in the sincerity to help, the willingness to be present when needed and the courage to extend a helping hand without expecting anything in return.

“When thousands of volunteers each contribute their time, the collective impact can transform lives and strengthen the well-being of our communities.”

He noted that volunteers came from diverse backgrounds but shared a common purpose of making a positive difference.

“This is the face of Penang’s youth that we are proud of.

“They do not merely speak about change but work to make it happen.”

He said the programme nurtured future leaders by instilling values such as leadership, teamwork, communication, discipline, empathy and time management.

Gooi also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening the programme in line with the Penang2030 vision, aimed at encouraging greater youth participation and building a more inclusive, caring and resilient society.

Also present at the ceremony were Penang Women’s Development Corporation chief executive officer Datuk Ong Bee Leng, Penang Youth Development Corporation general manager Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan Hooi Peng and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng.
