Fees waived until April 30 at facility with 143 parking spots
VISITORS can park for free until April 30 at the new 143-bay parking lot along the popular seafront recreational area in Persiaran Gurney, Penang.
Penang local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye said the parking lot formed part of Phase Two of the Gurney Bay development.
“The open parking area in Phase Two provides 143 parking bays for cars, while 71 bays are allocated for motorcycles,” he told reporters at a press conference held at the carpark.
H’ng said the facility would be open, free of charge, from March 18 until April 30.
“Parking charges will be imposed starting May 1.
“The rates are currently under review by the Chief Minister Incorporated and the state government,” he said.

He added that once all phases were completed, Gurney Bay would have 813 parking bays for cars in total.
This includes 68 bays in Phase One and 602 bays at a multi-storey parking facility, currently under construction in Phase Two.
“For motorcyclists, a total of 233 bays will be available, including 62 in Phase One, 71 at the Phase Two open parking area and 100 at the multi-storey parking facility,” said H’ng.
He said the Gurney Bay project, developed on land provided by the Penang government as part of the Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase Two reclamation project, aimed to create a world-class public recreational park enjoyed by all.
“The development spans 41ha and is being implemented in phases,” he said.
“Phase One, covering 11ha, was opened to the public on Feb 4, 2024.

“It has received encouraging response from visitors, becoming one of Penang’s new recreational destinations.
“Development works for Phase Two and Phase Three, which cover the remaining 30ha, are currently underway,” H’ng said.
“Progress for Phase Two has reached 99.06% and is expected to be completed this year, while Phase Three is currently at 3.36% and scheduled for completion in 2027,” he added.
Meanwhile, Penang island mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said Penang Island City Council (MBPP) was studying the possibility of converting the entire Persiaran Gurney into a one-way street to ease congestion in the area.
“We are conducting a comprehensive study on the possibility of converting Persiaran Gurney into a one-way road from Tanjung Tokong towards Jalan Pangkor,” he said.
“The study is expected to be completed this year.”
Also present at the press conference was Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo.
