A TREE-PLANTING activity, and bokashi composting demonstration and bin giveaway marked the launch of the UPM-Ekar Lui ESG Learning Hub in Hulu Langat, Selangor.
The hub is a collaboration by Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Malaysian National Commission for Unesco and Ekar Lui Farm School aimed to teach the public about environmental conservation, sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
Their partnership began in 2023 with various initiatives focusing on organic waste management, permaculture and community empowerment.
Ekar Lui Farm School founder Zalina Abdul Rahim said the partnership is important to ensure the initiative benefitted the society.
“What we are doing at Ekar Lui is not just for ourselves, but for the greater benefit of Sungai Lui and Hulu Langat,” she said.
Dusun Tua assemblyman Datuk Johan Abd Aziz, who launched the hub, said it could help expose residents, particularly families and children, to practical knowledge on sustainability.
He urged the Sungai Lui community to make use of the programmes and share what they learn with their children.
“It is important to gain knowledge and pass it on to the next generation.”
Johan also highlighted attractions in Dusun Tua, including Gunung Nuang, Sungai Gabai Waterfall and the hot springs, saying they could contribute to the area’s tourism potential.
“I really want to push Dusun Tua to become a tourism hub,” he said.
He also said there was potential to further develop the area for education and learning, while improving infrastructure to support its growth.
Bokashi composting is a fermentation process that uses beneficial microorganisms breaks down food waste.
