A clogged drain outside her home has left a Taman Johor Jaya resident frustrated and worried about the health risks it poses.
Tuition teacher Siew Fui See, 52, said the drain at Jalan Bakawali 45 used to flow freely but for the past two months, it has filled with stagnant water.
“The situation started after repair was carried out on my neighbour’s leaking water pipe.
“The soil left at the site was washed into the drain by rain, causing it to clog up.
“Sometimes the drain gives off a foul odour especially when it has not rained for days,” she said at a press conference organised by Johor Jaya DAP community centre head Lee Wern Yiing.
Siew said stagnant water caused the drain to develop fungal growth and mosquito larvae were also seen.
“My neighbours and I are worried that it could increase the risk of dengue.
“The clogged drain could also contribute to flash floods during the rainy season,” she added.
She said five complaints have been lodged with the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) through the Public Complaints Management System since Aug 26.
Despite the repeated complaints, she said the authorities have not taken concrete action to resolve the problem.
MBJB councillor Tan Tuan Peng said he will look into the matter.
