KUALA LUMPUR: ALL future development proposals in Kuala Lumpur must take into account input from local MPs before being submitted to local authorities for consideration and approval.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said MPs would also be able to access the One Stop Centre portal, where they can get details on development plans within their constituencies.
“The practice of allowing development projects to proceed without prior knowledge of elected officials must stop.
“MPs are elected to represent their communities and they must play a meaningful role in shaping their constituencies,” she said.
Yeoh said this on Monday (Jan 19) after chairing the Federal Territories Minister Council meeting with Kuala Lumpur MPs at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut.
Elaborating, Yeoh, who was accompanied by her deputy Datuk Lo Su Fui, said they hoped the move would improve accountability and transparency by involving MPs in managing and planning for the capital.
“Elected representatives will now play a bigger role in the management and running of City Hall,” she added.
Asked about DBKL’s 2026 budget, Yeoh said five committees, each headed by an MP, had been formed to deliberate on key matters affecting Kuala Lumpur.
She said the committee heads were volunteers and that members would decide how often to convene to discuss issues.
The committees were hawker management (Batu MP P. Prabakaran), public housing and community welfare (Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail), flood mitigation, road maintenance and slope management (Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan), traffic management (Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng) and cleanliness and greenery (Seputeh MP Teresa Kok).
Yeoh added that Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Fadhlun Mak Ujud would meet with other stakeholders before finalising details on the budget.
Present at the press conference were Zahir, Kok and Prabakaran, as well as Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun.
