A GOVERNMENT agency has launched a campaign to improve public awareness about the importance of intellectual property (IP).

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) is targeting rail commuters via a series of advertisements.

“A strong understanding of IP not only helps reduce losses caused by copyright infringement but also widens opportunities for economic growth and prosperity, allowing valuable ideas to be preserved and innovations to flourish,” said MyIPO director-general Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff.

“Local businesses will also have the chance to expand their potential with greater confidence and security.

“To achieve this objective through a more creative and accessible approach, MyIPO is running advertisements for the campaign on the LRT trains that commuters ride daily.”

Speaking during the campaign’s launch at the Taman Jaya LRT station in Petaling Jaya, Yusnieza said the campaign also utilised the rail service’s capability as a “high- impact mass communications medium” to bring its intended message to more people.

“The campaign carries an important message – that IP registration is no longer exclusive, but is a basic need for all creators and entrepreneurs.

“MyIPO is committed to encouraging people to be more vigilant in protecting their intellectual assets to reduce the risk of fraud as well as abuse of their works and brands,” she said.

In conjunction with the campaign, MyIPO is also holding a “Snap It Right” photo and video competition, offering a total of RM5,600 in prizes, including RM1,000 for the main prize.

Participants are required to take photos or videos of the train coaches containing MyIPO’s elements and post them on their social media pages as well as tag MyIPO.

“The competition was organised to celebrate the creative talents in Malaysia as well as to better educate the public about MyIPO through interactive engagement,” Yusnieza said.

During the launch, MyIPO presented a RM2,000 zakat contribution to Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Aziz in Jalan Templer, Petaling Jaya, as well as RM150 each to 20 asnaf (destitute) recipients.

Also present were MyIPO deputy director-general (management) Sh Arifin Sh Mohd Noor, deputy director-general (commercial) Kamarul Faizal Hashim and deputy director-general (operations) Razhuan Hussin.

The competition deadline is Dec 31. For details, visit MyIPO’s social media platforms.
