QuickCheck: Was a peeping tom caught in the women's toilet at Sentul LRT station?

USING a public toilet should be one of the few moments in daily life where privacy is guaranteed, a reasonable expectation that one man in Kuala Lumpur chose to violate.

A video shared by the victim showing the suspect being detained by auxiliary police at the Sentul LRT station went viral, serving as a warning to women to stay vigilant in public spaces.

Was a peeping tom really caught in the women's toilet at Sentul LRT station?

Verdict:

TRUE

A 23-year-old food shop assistant was fined RM3,500 by the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate's Court on Monday (April 20) after pleading guilty to peeping on a woman in a toilet cubicle at the Sentul LRT station.

Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin meted out the fine, in default four months in jail, on Abdul Samad Rosman after he was found to have insulted the modesty of a 44-year-old woman at the women's toilet in Bandar Baru Sentul at 8am on April 16.

The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shafika Azwa Fikri urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a deterrent, taking into account public safety and interest.

Defence counsel CH Low from the National Legal Aid Foundation pleaded for leniency, citing the accused's financial hardship and remorse for his actions.

The case drew public attention after the victim shared a video of the suspect being detained by auxiliary police at the LRT station as a warning to others to remain vigilant in public spaces.
