THE Malacca Strait is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, connecting the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. Every year, nearly 100,000 vessels pass through this narrow 800km stretch of water, carrying everything from crude oil to consumer electronics. Given its importance, is it true that the physical dimensions of the strait actually dictate how cargo ships are built?

While the Malacca Strait does not dictate the design of every small boat or regional ferry, it sets a definitive size ceiling for commercial vessels. This has given rise to a specific class of ship known as "Malaccamax."
The primary restriction is the depth of the channel. At its shallowest point, the Malacca Strait is approximately 25m deep. For a massive ship to pass through safely without hitting the seabed, it needs what mariners call "under-keel clearance."
According to naval architecture standards, a Malaccamax vessel is typically designed with a maximum draft (the depth of the ship below the waterline) of 20.5m and anything with a deeper draft would be physically unable to navigate the strait.
Why does this matter to shipbuilders? In the shipping industry, size literally matters as larger ships can carry more cargo using less fuel per ton.
So if a ship is built larger than the Malaccamax limit, can no longer use the Malacca Strait and must instead take a detour through the Lombok Strait or the Makassar Strait in Indonesia. These alternative routes add thousands of kilometres to a journey between the Middle East and East Asia, significantly increasing fuel costs and travel time. For most global shipping companies, the cost of this detour outweighs the benefits of building a ship beyond the "Malaccamax" limit.
Because of this, the Malacca Strait acts as a global design template for the largest tankers and container ships. Shipyards in South Korea, China and Japan – which build the majority of the world's fleet – must adhere to these "Malaccamax" specifications to ensure their vessels remain commercially viable for the world's busiest trade routes.
However, it is important to note that many ships are built for different constraints. Some are designed for the Panama Canal (Neopanamax) or the Suez Canal (Suezmax), which have their own unique depth and width restrictions.
