Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) has introduced a new solar-powered closed-circuit TV (CCTV) system called Iris to enhance safety, sustainability and efficiency in the city.

Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim said the technology would bolster city-wide surveillance, especially in high-risk areas, while aligning with MBSA’s commitment to a green and low-carbon agenda.

“With this technology, we can enhance safety control across the city, particularly in high-risk areas, while the use of solar energy aligns with MBSA’s policy towards a green and low-carbon city.

“Iris not only saves energy but also expands surveillance capabilities in areas without access to electricity,” he said at Selangor Innovation Appreciation Ceremony 2025 in Shah Alam, as reported by Bernama.

The event was officiated by Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and attended by state Islamic affairs and innovation culture committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah and state secretary Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzil Ahmad.

Mohd Fauzi said the solar-powered system added value by enabling effective monitoring in remote locations while supporting MBSA’s green city aspirations.

He said MBSA planned to expand Iris coverage across its jurisdiction by next year to support full integration of renewable energy in its monitoring operations.

“MBSA will focus on realising ‘Smart City Shah Alam’ by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its security and traffic management systems.

“AI will help detect suspicious activities and manage traffic flow more efficiently without relying entirely on officers on the ground,” he added.

Mohd Fauzi said the AI-based system was developed in stages over the past four years and was now undergoing testing to strengthen public safety monitoring, including disaster response such as flood control.

He said the integrated system would enhance response efficiency and reduce operational costs by reducing the need to be physically present at all times.

“This innovation enables us to monitor flood-prone areas more quickly and accurately.

“When the system detects rising water levels, early warnings can be sent immediately to residents and response teams.

“It speeds up the detection process, complaint management and information dissemination to the public.

“The Iris and AI systems truly make an impact in our efforts to make Shah Alam a safe and efficient city,” he said.

Earlier, Iris was named the overall winner in the Social Innovation and Best Innovation Project competition categories under Selangor Public Service Innovation Persada 2025 ceremony, presented by Amirudin.
