Heritage trail signboards placed around Sibu

A heritage trail signboards have been placed at five locations in Sibu, including the An-Nur Mosque.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has reinstated five Heritage Trail signboards across the town centre to step up tourism promotion and reinforce Sibu’s identity ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

SMC deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley said the initiative formed part of the council’s ongoing efforts to preserve the town’s historical landmarks.

“The five locations identified where the heritage signs have been reinstated are the Al-Qadim Mosque, Sibu An-Nur Mosque, Warriors Memorial Site, Lau King Howe Hospital Memorial Museum and the Sibu Heritage Centre.”

He said the signs served as “storytellers”, helping visitors and younger generations to learn about the historical background and identity of Sibu’s community.

“We are in the process of identifying additional potential locations to be included in the Heritage Trail route and will seek more funding next year to expand this initiative,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Abdullah said the Warriors Memorial Site located in Phase 2 site of the town square had been beautified with the planting of a variety of trees and shrubs.

The tree species planted around the memorial include Allamanda cathartica, Acalypha wilkesiana, Duranta ‘Dwarf Yellow’, Malvaviscus arboreus, Phyllanthus myrtifolius, Hymenocallis speciosa (Spider Lily), Pandanus pygmaeus and variegated bucida.

Separately, he shared that SMC had achieved a 50% score in the progress assessment by Urbanice Malaysia, which evaluated 24 local authorities across Sarawak.

This placed SMC among the top performing councils under the “Notable Progress” category in recognition of its concrete efforts in waste management, green energy and sustainable development initiatives.

Among SMC’s most notable efforts included advanced waste management systems and green energy initiatives, supporting sustainable industries and eco-friendly infrastructure, and enhancing local engagement and community resilience.

“Although a 50% achievement indicates there is still work ahead, this demonstrates SMC’s direction and willingness to be measured, accountable and aligned with global and state-level ambitions,” said Mohammed Abdullah.
