THE Alliance Bank Heritage Run drew a record 5,500 participants to the streets of George Town, marking the largest turnout since the event began three years ago.
Held in the city’s Unesco World Heritage enclave, the sustainability-themed run introduced a new 21km half marathon alongside its 12km race, 7km run and 3km family walk categories.
Endorsed by the Penang government, the run aimed to celebrate George Town’s living heritage while promoting community wellness and eco-friendly living.
Alliance Bank group chief executive officer Kellee Kam, who flagged off the race, said it was encouraging to see so many participants take part.
“The Heritage Run is a testament to our dedication to building a more connected community and promoting sustainable living.
“Through this event, we honour the cultural heritage of George Town and inspire collective action to preserve it for generations to come.
“The Heritage Run is more than a race; it is a celebration of community and culture,” said Kam.
During the run, participants experienced Penang’s iconic cultural landmarks and heritage streets.
Kenyan runner David Kibet topped the men’s 21km category, followed by Ow Yong Jin Kuang and Yeow Ni Jia. In the women’s event, Ong Ee Ling finished first ahead of Wong Mi-Chi and Yee Pei Ni.
The event featured a bazaar with local crafts and food, trishaw rides through heritage streets and a large art mural contributed by runners.
Race kits reflected the green theme, featuring bamboo medals, recycled polyester shirts and reusable bags.
