UNDERSTANDING and speaking English with confidence can foster friendships and enable a deeper appreciation for various things.
English-Speaking Union (ESU) Malaysia chairman Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar emphasised this as Malaysia hosted the 25th ESU International Council Meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
It marked the first time the meeting was held in Malaysia since the organisation’s inception 25 years ago.
“We want to promote English as a global language.
“During this meeting, we shared and exchanged ideas and knowledge,” said Tunku Dara.
“We also explored what programmes we could offer and what others could contribute.
“The goal is to ensure the development of skill and confidence in using the English language in a friendly and accessible manner,” she said.
“If we don’t understand English in a global context, we miss out on what is being said.
“To communicate effectively and build friendships, we need to understand the language.
“We also want to support young people by promoting communication and public speaking skills, so they too can engage confidently with others around the world.
“Through programmes involving digital media, the Education Department, our supporters, alumni and partners, we hope to make this a reality,” she added.
The ESU is an independent, non-political, educational charity with members across the UK and US, and branches in 50 countries worldwide.
It promotes English exposure through book donations and exchange programmes.
Tunku Dara said a continuing challenge for ESU Malaysia was to provide thought-provoking, enabling and informative programmes that attract new members and retain existing ones.
Among the key events organised each year is the national public speaking competition where the winner earns the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the international competition in London.
Another annual highlight is the national essay writing competition, which is divided into two categories for age 13 to 15 and 16 to 18.
“Our aim is to promote goodwill and understanding among people of all ethnicities.
“ESU Malaysia is proud of its growing membership and its contribution to international understanding,” said Tunku Dara.
