Happy vibes at the pop-up market last month on George Town’s famous footbridge.
PENANG’S famous four-way “octopus bridge” near Komtar, George Town will be hosting another pop-up market after a successful debut in August.
Organised by Pinang Lang Life Story Service with support from the state government, the pedestrian bridge market will feature artisanal goods, handcrafted items and street food.
Event founder Daniel Tan said the event themed “Octovibe: Our Time, Our Story” celebrates Penang’s rich culture and heritage.
It will be held on Sept 27 from 6pm to 10pm.
He said the unique location was ideal for attracting tourists and promoting local products.
“Gather with friends for an evening of memories, music and sunset vibes,” said Tan.
He is also encouraging vendors to join as the earlier market on Aug 2 themed “Sunset to Sound” attracted 20 traders.
The fare had received encouraging feedback from 200 visitors.
“Many told us they only found out about the market at the last minute due to limited publicity.”
However, vendors managed to cover costs and are looking forward to returning in the next edition, he said.
The pop-up market is part of an initiative to revitalise the city centre by encouraging public use of the footbridge and stimulating economic activity.
“With more people using this space, we hope it will deter vandalism and foster greater care of the public structure,” he said.
Built by the Penang Island Municipal Council in 1993 and costing RM1.25mil, the bridge connects Jalan Penang, Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong and Jalan Burma.
People say the city landmark looks like an octopus when viewed from above, albeit with only four arms.
In the early 2000s, it was beset with maintenance and safety issues and became a hotspot for theft, loitering and vandalism, causing many people to avoid it.
Even after a RM6mil upgrade from 2015 to 2017 that included escalators, lifts, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and lighting, it continued to receive complaints about breakdowns and cleanliness.
This prompted public debate about whether to demolish or preserve it.
