Kampung Gajah flood mitigation project design underway

Mohammad Nizar: Funds for Kampung Gajah project allocated under 12th Malaysia Plan.

THE Kampung Gajah flood mitigation project is currently at the detailed design stage, says Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

The Perak infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman said the final design would be finalised by February 2026.

He said the project, which included land acquisition, was slated to be advertised by July next year, and the letter of acceptance anticipated to be issued the following November.

“Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) remains committed to executing the project without any delays,” he said when replying to a question from Zafarulazhan Zan (PN- Kampung Gajah) during the Perak State Assembly in Ipoh yesterday.

Zafarulazhan had asked about the status of the project at the town in Perak Tengah, some 75km from Ipoh, and an assurance that it would not be delayed, as this would pose risks for villagers.

Mohammad Nizar said funds for the project had been allocated under the 12th Malaysia Plan.

He also responded to a question by Berhanudin Ahmad (PN- Manong) on the flood mitigation project in Kuala Kangsar.

Mohammad Nizar said DID had submitted a proposal under the 13th Malaysian Plan for the project.

On resident complaints of flooding at Jalan Kwong Tong cemetery, Jalan Talang and Jalan Taiping in Kuala Kangsar, he said various agencies such as Public Works Department (JKR) and Kuala Kangsar Municipal Council (MPKK) were involved.

Regarding floods at Jalan Talang and Jalan Taiping, DID had been carrying out annual maintenance work at Sungai Kangsar, he added.

“Kuala Kangsar DID also conducts regular river maintenance in flood-prone and hotspot areas, depending on its yearly allocation.

“MPKK will submit a budget request to Housing and Local Government Ministry to upgrade drains in the area to handle rainwater flow,” said Mohammad Nizar.

For federal and state roads under JKR supervision, he said routine and emergency drain cleaning were also carried out.
