MRSM Pendang hit by storm, no students hurt

KUALA LUMPUR: No injuries were reported among Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) students in Pendang, Kedah, after a storm and heavy rains hit the institution this afternoon.

Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said he received a report about the incident and ordered the college authorities to monitor and carry out periodic inspections to ensure the safety and well-being of the students.

"I was informed that the dormitory and academic blocks, surau and food hall were unaffected and electricity supply in the area was normal.

“However, the administration block suffered extensive damage, including to the teachers’ room, lecture hall, computer lab, counsellor’s room and art education room, and electricity supply to the block has been cut,” he posted on Facebook on Monday (April 27).

He added that the Mara secondary education division director has been instructed to take immediate action to ensure students are safe, and a special emergency allocation will be channelled for repairs.

MRSM Pendang was among the premises affected by a storm and strong winds that struck the district this evening.

Pendang Civil Defence District officer Lt (PA) Yuslina Yusoff said the incident, which occurred at about 6pm, involved several mukim, including Padang Pusing, Ayer Putih and Rambai.

Other affected areas included Kampung Gajah Mati, Paya Mat Inson and Kampung Lampam, with several houses and premises damaged while fallen trees blocked roads.

She said the department received an emergency call at about 6.30pm, and six personnel with a vehicle were immediately deployed to provide initial assistance. – Bernama
