A RECENT walkabout in Pandan Perdana, Selangor, has shed light on unreported crimes and concerns among traders and residents.

The walkabout at the commercial area, led by Teratai assemblyman Yew Jia Haur, was held with the police and personnel from Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) to raise safety awareness and address local issues.

Yew estimated that between 10% and 20% of the cases went unreported.

“Some premises that we visited reported experiencing robberies at their shops.

“But when we enquired further, we found out that some did not report the incidents to the police,” he said.

Yew said it was vital for all cases, be they criminal in nature or otherwise, to be reported to the police to ensure necessary action was taken.

“Not reporting incidents can affect actions by the police or local authorities.

“Some say they do not know how or who to report the cases to,” he added.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Azam Ismail said one of the recurring cases in the area was vehicle theft.

“We have not had any case this year, but we are aware that such incidents have happened previously in commercial areas,” he said.

ACP Mohd Azam said that police had increased patrols in the area since last year.

The police, he added, would continue to conduct more such public engagements and gather feedback from the people.

MPAJ president Dr Ani Ahmad reaffirmed the local council’s commitment to working with the police and stakeholders to resolve security concerns.

“At the moment, the situation is under control,” she noted.

Apart from security issues, Ani noted that other concerns raised by residents included cleanliness, proposals for additional parking spaces and improvements to local infrastructure.
