PLUS Malaysia Bhd has nurtured around 270,000 trees and 250,000 sq m of shrubs along its highway network.

PLUS managing director Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the company’s mission was to connect communities with the aim of shaping a safe and sustainable future.

She said this was in line with national sustainability goals that called for companies to prioritise the environment, society’s needs and good governance.

“PLUS’ environmental conservation efforts aim to actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental footprint.

“Our initiatives leverage green technologies and energy efficiency.

“We also harness renewable energy, which include the retrofitting of over 37,000 LED lights along highways and the installation of solar PV systems across our offices and facilities.”

Nik Airina said these efforts had succeeded in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 27% compared to the company’s 2017 baseline.

“PLUS highways facilitate seamless travel and serve as gateways to numerous ecotourism destinations across the country.

“Therefore, I encourage everyone to explore the beauty of Malaysia’s nature through domestic travel,” she added.

During its Forest Conservation and Environmental Awareness programme in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, PLUS hosted an exhibition featuring various related agencies.

The exhibition showcased research on tropical forestry by Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) and wildlife conservation initiatives by the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

It also highlighted urban farming by the social enterprise Eats, Shoots & Roots, the healing properties of plants by the women-led Little Eden Succulents as well as the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and Pertubuhan Sahabat Gambut Asli Temuan (SGAT).

The programme’s highlight was an insightful talk and engagement session.

These were organised by FRIM’s Forest Biodiversity division and PLUS’ employees with the aim of raising awareness of wildlife conservation.

The event also presented the importance and challenges as well as potential collaboration opportunities in protecting Malaysia’s biodiversity.

Also present at the event were PLUS chief governance and risk officer Satpal Singh and chief people officer Shazalina Ahmad.
