Film fashion: Trends that are set to make a stylish jump to real life this year

On-screen dressing has always been a big factor in defining a year’s fashion trends.

In 2024, films such as Challengers, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Dune: Part Two influenced the popular aesthetic – tenniscore, goth and post-apocalyptic looks, respectively.

Wicked 2 will probably set the colour trend for this year.

Pinks and greens are predicted to be the colours of choice. Although perceived as an odd pairing, runways have shown that they can indeed work together in one outfit.

The first Wicked film has already scored numerous nominations, including four at this year’s Golden Globes and 11 at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. So expect the cast members to help keep the pink-green combo going strong, as they step out onto the red carpet at awards shows.

With a release on Netflix imminent, science fiction horror film Frankenstein has a high chance to further fuel the goth fashion movement.

Starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth (these familiar faces in the style industry are known for their bold dressing), it will be a win for the dark, moody and morbid style of dress.

Blood red, black and midnight blue can seem sombre, but add in floral embellishments, and suddenly the outfit takes on a delightfully whimsical feel.

Coquette was huge last year – and will probably not go anywhere soon.

The hyper-feminine trend references a flirty and soft girly style. Think princess-like, which is where Snow White comes in.

With this 2025 live remake film, the doe-eyed and bohemian look can only become more popular. Whites, lace and ribbons will explode onto the scene with renewed vigour.

That said, feminine does not necessarily mean weak. Neo-noir action film Ballerina is going to prove that a woman dressed in tulle can be deadly too.

The main character of the story is a ballerina training as an assassin, and this can only mean one thing – the emo-punk aesthetic from the 2000s will return with vengeance.

Finally, there is A Simple Favor 2. Back in 2018, the black comedy film helped popularise female suiting.

Blake Lively (who is set to make a return for this second installment) was seen wearing three-piece suits and tuxedos in different scenes.

Since then, more womenswear designers have embraced the structure of men’s clothing: stiff shirts, classic pants and more.
