The beauty pendulum is primed to swing in the opposite direction again, and this time, it’s taking a turn for the unexpected.

From head-turning red carpet sightings to the swelling buzz on the product launch grapevine, lilac eye makeup will soon be all the rage.

A deviation from the monotony of the clean makeup bandwagon, the particular shade brings forth a sense of light-hearted playfulness and can be quite the conversation starter.

The bold colour complements skin tones of various depths and undertones, enhancing their individual beauty – so don’t be jarred by its striking quality.

It also pairs incredibly well with brown eyes. With this colour combination, the golden flecks in brown eyes are greatly emphasised, creating a warm, soulful gaze.

The high impact-to-effort ratio is an added bonus. The approach can be as minimal as you wish – the effect will still warrant a double-take.

For starters, try a soft wash of the colour all over the lid.

A matte eyeshadow gives it a more muted look, while a shimmery texture adds a touch of glamour without going overboard. Here, powder eyeshadows are suitable options.

Building upon that, you can incorporate different textured eyeshadows to bring more dimension to the eye makeup.

But if you’re looking for a more intense one-and-done product, look into cream eyeshadows.

They may come in either stick or pot form, and can offer more opaque colour pay-offs.

These also typically last longer throughout the day, with some capable of surviving rain and humidity. For a shade as vivid as lilac, you may want to choose products that can last throughout the day, as imperfections can appear more obvious.

Alternatively, you can simply rely on a cream eyeliner.

Whether you choose to swipe it across the lash line or colour the waterline, these techniques may just be the easiest point of entry for this trend.

Not only is the pencil format the most portable of the bunch, but the eye look is also one of the easiest to touch up throughout the day.

Whichever way you choose to approach the trend, one thing is for sure: p ut extra care into selecting well-formulated products, as purples and pastels are notoriously difficult to make smooth and seamless.

The ideal formula should glide onto the skin without too much tugging or skipping, and preferably smudge-proof once it has set.

For inspiration on how to incorporate the trend into your rotation, stars and experts alike have been spotted donning the pop of colour.

From rising film star Chase Infiniti to pop queen Madonna, lilac has been the colour du jour for not only their makeup, but also for their outfits.

Well-known makeup artists such as Nina Park, Lisa Eldridge, and more are also producing tutorials on how to create incredible looks, from the simplest flick to the most elaborate eyeshadow work.
