WITH rapid advances in the medicine and healthcare field, it has now become possible to address newer and bigger challenges than before, leading to continuous improvement in the field for the benefit of all.
As evidenced by the current global pandemic, healthcare professionals are also playing increasingly important roles at the forefront of handling global healthcare issues.
To nurture the next generation of medical professionals who will be ready to tackle such roles, Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) offers programmes that carve a pathway towards a bright future in healthcare and medicine.
All programmes offered at NUMed are identical to those offered at Newcastle University, UK, leading to the award of the same qualifications - but at significantly reduced costs, as compared to studying in the UK. It also offers the opportunity for students to get a quality education locally without needing to travel in these trying times.
Presenting the best of Newcastle University on Malaysian shores, NUMed offers a Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences programme alongside its acclaimed undergraduate degrees in medicine and biomedical sciences, as well as opportunities for postgraduate study.
Those looking to enter the medical and healthcare profession can choose the pathway most suitable for their interests and aspirations towards a fulfilling career.
To start off, NUMed’s 12-month foundation programme is tailored for Malaysian students who aim to pursue medicine, biological or biomedical sciences, or science at the undergraduate level.
Subsequently, upon successful completion and final grades achieved, students can apply to either the university’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme (subject to interview) or 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.
The MBBS programme is equivalent to its UK counterpart and is recognised by both the General Medical Council, UK and the Malaysian Medical Council.
Though all five years of the programme are delivered in Malaysia, fourth-year students will have the flexibility to study for up to eight weeks at Newcastle University in the UK, or opt for an extra year in the UK for an intercalated research qualification at either Bachelors or Masters level, adding depth to their knowledge and education experience.
Meanwhile, for those looking at other areas of healthcare, the 2+1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme covers a diverse study of key areas that include biochemistry, genetics, physiology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacology. The first two years of the programme are conducted at the Malaysia campus and students will complete their third year at the UK campus, where they will be placed at one of the highly regarded research institutes at Newcastle University for research-led teaching and an intensive research project.
This stands students to be well prepared and in good stead to enter the medical and healthcare field after graduation.
Having always been at the forefront of research and teaching, NUMed’s reputation has been externally confirmed as of the highest international quality.
A member of the prestigious Russell Group, NUMed features a world-leading collaboration of research scientists, medical doctors and teaching professionals. In addition, the university also offers students a wide range of top-notch resources and a high-calibre faculty.
In order to optimally prepare aspiring healthcare professionals for a rewarding career ahead, all faculty members are required to obtain their Diploma in Medical Education.
To nurture well-rounded graduates NUMed employs innovative teaching methods to facilitate students’ holistic development, complete with opportunities to hone critical thinking, creativity and confidence.
For those looking to get a headstart on a career in the medical and healthcare field, NUMed is accepting applications for its September intake for Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, MBBS and BMS undergraduate programmes.
