No high for Ong-Teo in Hylo Open

Out: Ong Yew Sin (left) and Teo Ee Yi fall in the second round.

PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi have been dealt a double blow.

Just three days after slipping out of the top 10 in the world rankings, Yew Sin-Ee Yi slumped to a 12-21, 19-21 defeat at the hands of China’s world No. 30 Chen Boyang-Liu Yi in the men’s doubles second round of the Hylo Open in Saarbrucken yesterday.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi had dropped from No. 9 to No. 11 in the rankings after a poor second half of the year.

The defeat in Germany was the pair’s second consecutive early round defeat after they suffered the same in the French Open last week. Their only good results was the semi-finals in the Taiwan Open in June.

The duo are now in danger of falling behind in the top-eight race to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The pair will next compete in the back-to-back Japan Masters (Nov 14-19) and China Masters (Nov 21-26).

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s challenge in the Hylo Open is over after mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing went down fighting to Holland’s world No. 18 Robin Tabeling-Selena Piek 16-21, 21-19, 16-21.

World No. 22 Kian Meng-Pei Jing’s woes continued after the pair were excluded from the Road to Gold (RTG) Olympics programme recently.
