Malaysian doubles pairs through to second round in Thailand


KUALA LUMPUR: All three Malaysian men’s and women’s doubles pairs are through to the second round of the Thailand Open badminton championships at the Thunder Dome in Bangkok.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) only pair Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han beat Filipinos Philip Joper Escueta-Ronel Estanislao 21-18, 21-16 while independents Hoon Thien How-Lim Khim Wah fought hard to down China’s Han Chengkai-Zhou Haodong 15-21, 21-19, 21-18.

Former All-England champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong faced stiff resistance against Hong Kong’s Chan Tsz Kit-Law Cheuk Him before winning 21-17, 22-20.

The women’s side saw Lim Yin Loo-Lee Meng Yean, Amelia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho and Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei advancing.

Top Malaysian women’s singles shuttler Tee Jing Yi also progressed with a 21-13, 21-15 win over Thai Supanida Katethong as did the mixed pair of Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing. 

Malaysia’s challenge in men’s singles competition, however, ended with the 17-21, 15-21 defeat of former national shuttler Tan Chun Seang by 15th seed Kazumasa Sakai of Japan in the second round.

As expected, BAM announced their squad for the World Junior Championships in Peru from Nov 4-15, with Cheam June Wei and Goh Jin Wei spearheading the boys’ and girls’ squad.

Mixed doubles first round: Tan Aik Quan-Lai Pei Jing bt Wannawat Ampunsuwan-Pacharapun Chochuwong (Tha) 21-10, 21-13.
