Cool Umar shatters Games record en route to gold

KUCHING: Johor’s Umar Osman was in cruise control from start to finish on his way to retain the 400m Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold.

The 21-year-old broke the Games record by clocking 46.78s at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya on Wednesday (Aug 21), to break the previous time set by Selangor’s Mohd Ilham Suhaimi (47.02s) at the 2018 Perak Sukma.

Sabah’s Khalil Helmi took the silver with a time of 48.05s and Perak’s N. Kanishkann came in third with a time of 48.42s.

It was Umar’s third gold medal in the Sarawak Games as he also won the 4x400m boys and mixed team relay.

In the girls’ 400m final, Melaka’s Shayna Marianne Pereira took the gold with a time of 57.74s, edging Kelantan’s Nor Ainaa Balqis Hashim by just 0.03s in the race.

Bronze medal went to Johor’s Nurul Aliah Maisarah Nor Azmi, who clocked 58.34s.
