Selangor will not receive any federal allocation for Sukma 2026.

State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the state received a letter from the Youth and Sports Ministry that no allocation would be provided to Selangor for the biennial Malaysia Games.

However, he said the event dates remain unchanged, with Sukma to be held from Aug 15 to 24 and Para Sukma from Sept 5 to 10.

For Sukma, he said there would be 37 sports involving 469 events.

“Synchronised swimming was dropped because it failed to meet the minimum requirement of six participating states,” he said when met at Shah Alam Car-Free Day and the Sukma and Para Sukma Selangor 2026 Torch Run.

Mohd Najwan also said the opening ceremony venue would be changed as part of cost-cutting measures.

“We have decided to withdraw from holding the opening ceremony at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in line with the Selangor Ruler’s decree for us to control our spending.

“We will hold the opening and closing ceremonies on a smaller, more modest scale, without elements like fireworks and the like,” he said.

He added that the target number of volunteers have been reduced from nearly 30,000 to between 3,000 and 5,000 to cut allowance costs.

Mohd Najwan said the printing of accreditation cards would be borne by the respective state contingents.

“Each additional official from the state contingents beyond the quota set will be charged an additional fee of RM100 per person by the secretariat.”

On April 30, Mohd Najwan had said the original allocation of RM100mil for the Games would be reduced to about RM40mil to RM50mil.
