PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi is determined to deliver a strong showing at the NCAA Championships before turning his attention to the Malaysian Open later this month.
Azeem is set to compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, from June 10-13, before returning for the home event from June 19-21.
The 22-year-old got back to his lightning ways after equalling his national record of 10.09s in the preliminary rounds in Kentucky to qualify for the championships next week.
It was the same time Azeem clocked during the World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia, in 2022.
Since joining Auburn University in 2023, it will be Azeem’s first time competing in the 100m event in the NCAA Championships, and he’s hoping to get all the support he can.
“I’m really thankful for all the support I have received for me to excel,” said Azeem to Malaysian Athletics (MA).
“I appreciate the support through all my ups and downs.
“I’m going to be heading for the NCAA Championships in Oregon soon, and I hope everyone continues to pray for my success there.
“Not just for my own individual success but for the country as a whole as well.”
Following his campaign in Oregon, Azeem will have little time to recover before returning to competition at the Malaysian Open, with less than a week separating the two events.
Despite the demanding schedule, Azeem is looking forward to racing on home soil at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
“I will also be competing in the Malaysian Open, and I want to invite all athletics fans to come and show their support.
“Hopefully, there will be more good news to celebrate then,” said Azeem.
