Azeem equals national record in the preliminaries


PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi has equalled his national record to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

In the preliminaries at Lexington in Kentucky, the 22-year-old Auburn University athlete clocked a season’s best of 10.09s to finish third in the heat three quarter-finals, securing a spot as one of the top 12 sprinters in the competition.

In his heat, Penn State’s Ajani Dwyer finished first with a time of 9.99s, while Tennessee’s Traunard Folson was second, clocking 10.04s.

The other Auburn students qualifying for the championships are Kanyinsola Ajayi (9.84s), Israel Okon (9.99s), Tyler Davis (10.07s) and Omari Lewis (10.12s).

Azeem broke the national record in 2022, when he clocked 10.09s in the World Junior Championships in Cali, Colombia.
