QuickCheck: Are the police initiating a special operation against corruption?

NEWS of authorities coming down hard on crime is always welcome.

A recent social media post claims that the acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ibrahim Darus held a press conference announcing the start of "Ops Cantas Khas" targeting corruption.

However, the post appears to contain incendiary claims.

Did such a press conference take place?

Verdict:

FALSE

Police secretary Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali, in a statement on Sunday (Aug 9), said no such press conference took place and the post is fake.

"The acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police has never held such a press conference or issued any statement as claimed," he said.

He said the post misuses images of the acting Deputy IGP to create the impression that the purported statement represents the official position of the police.

"Such actions can mislead the public, cause misunderstanding and undermine the credibility of the individual and the police institution," he said, adding that a police report had been lodged over the matter and investigations are ongoing.

"The public is advised not to believe or share unverified information and to seek confirmation through official police channels and reliable news sources," he said.
