QuickCheck: Is it true that heavy downpours can cause bee colonies to migrate?


HEAVY rain often sends people rushing indoors, but what about bees? After days of relentless downpours, it is not uncommon to hear claims that bee colonies abandon their hives and migrate to find drier, safer places.

As swarms occasionally appear in gardens, trees or even on buildings after wet weather, many wonder whether heavy downpours are the reason behind these sudden relocations. So is it true that heavy rain causes bee colonies to migrate?

Verdict:

False

Heavy downpours alone do not cause healthy bee colonies to migrate.

Honey bees are remarkably resilient and have evolved to cope with periods of wet weather. During heavy rain, worker bees typically remain inside the hive, where they cluster together to protect the queen, brood and food stores. They also reduce or stop foraging until conditions improve.

While prolonged rainfall can make it more difficult for bees to collect nectar and pollen, healthy colonies generally survive by relying on stored honey. Once the weather clears, foraging activity resumes.

When a colony leaves its hive, the behaviour is known as swarming, which is a natural part of the honey bee's life cycle rather than a direct response to rain.

Swarming usually occurs during spring or other periods of strong colony growth, when the hive becomes crowded. Before departing, scout bees search for a suitable new nesting site, after which the old queen leaves with thousands of worker bees to establish a new colony.

However, extreme weather can indirectly contribute to colony relocation under certain circumstances. Flooding, storm damage, falling trees or destruction of the hive may force bees to abandon an unsafe nest.

Scientists also note that managed beekeepers may relocate hives to protect colonies from floods or other severe weather, but this is a human intervention rather than a natural migration by the bees themselves.

The next time you spot a swarm of bees after a spell of heavy rain, remember that the weather is probably just a coincidence. More often than not, the colony is carrying out its natural reproductive cycle rather than fleeing the downpour.
