DEEP in the misty rainforests of Southeast Asia, a small, secretive feline slips silently through the trees. With its beautifully patterned coat and long, flowing tail, it resembles a miniature clouded leopard.

The marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata) is indeed one of Southeast Asia’s rarest and most elusive wild cats.
Although it is not the region’s single rarest species, the marbled cat is exceptionally difficult to detect. Its low population density, elusive nature and dependence on intact primary forests make it one of the least frequently recorded wild cats in the region.
Weighing just 2kg to 5kg, about the size of a medium-sized domestic cat, the marbled cat is highly adapted to life in the trees. Its exceptionally long tail helps it maintain balance, while its broad paws and flexible ankles allow it to climb down tree trunks head-first and move with remarkable agility through the canopy.
The marbled cat is believed to be an opportunistic hunter, preying on birds, squirrels and other small mammals. It is found in the forests of the Himalayan foothills, mainland Southeast Asia, as well as Sumatra and Borneo.
The species is classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, primarily because of rapid deforestation, habitat fragmentation caused by logging and oil palm plantations, and widespread snaring. Its long-term survival depends heavily on the protection of old-growth forests.
