A viral video appears to show a car speeding through George Town while being pursued by cops.

Did this really happen?

Police are tracking down a driver who hit 12 vehicles in George Town while being pursued by a patrol car for over 20km before escaping.

A 43-second video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the vehicle was spotted under suspicious circumstances in Green Lane but when ordered to stop, the driver sped off towards Persiaran Gurney.

"The pursuit continued as the man attempted to evade arrest. He eventually escaped after about 20km and efforts to locate him are ongoing," he said.

He said police have received 12 reports from individuals whose vehicles were hit.

Investigations are ongoing under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
