Menstruation is more than just a monthly discomfort. Cramps, tiredness and other symptoms can make getting out of bed a struggle for some women, especially during the first couple of days.
Getting a day off for period pain has been nothing more than a dream, however.
So, did Spain become the first European country to introduce paid menstrual leave?
VERDICT:

TRUE
The country now has a law allowing employees experiencing severe menstrual pain to take paid leave.
Since 2023, the policy officially recognises menstruation as a valid reason to take time off, as long as a doctor approves it. This means workers don’t have to rely on general sick leave, making Spain the first European country to offer paid menstrual leave.
While Spain leads the way in Europe, Japan was the first country in the world to put such a policy in place.
