QuickCheck: Was a man caught on video stealing laptops from a religious school in Johor Baru?


A collection of videos claiming to show a man breaking into a private religious school in Johor Baru recently went viral.

The black and white CCTV footage showed that the man was stealing laptops, documents, and cash from the premises.

Is the video real?

TRUE

The police said that a local man was arrested for allegedly stealing four units of laptops worth RM6,000 from a private Islamic religious school in Johor Baru.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said police received a report from a 34-year-old Malaysian woman on the burglary at 1.08pm on Tuesday (June 23).

“We also detected viral videos of the incident on Wednesday (June 24) at 4pm,’’ he said in a statement on Thursday (June 25).

He said following the report and the viral video, police detained a 32-year-old Malaysian man for allegedly being involved in theft at 4.30am on June 24.

“Our initial investigation found the suspect has 10 previous criminal records, including drug-related offences, and he tested positive for methamphetamine,’’ added ACP Radin Ramlan.

He said police also seized the four stolen laptops, and the case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

ACP Radin Ramlan said the suspect has been remanded from June 24 until 29, to assist with the investigation.
