Workers from two competing tourism companies broke into a brawl outside a tourism kiosk at Jesselton Point in Kota Kinabalu at around 10.30am on Sunday, with a video of the incident going viral on Facebook shortly after.
The dispute is believed to have stemmed from a disagreement between workers of the two companies over competition for customers.
Kota Kinabalu OCPD Supt Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman confirmed that police had received a report regarding the incident.
"The incident is believed to have stemmed from a dispute between workers of two tourism companies over competition for customers.
"The brawl resulted in chairs being thrown, causing damage to property belonging to another party at the location," he said in a statement on Sunday (March 29).
He said a police report had been lodged by an affected kiosk operator for the purpose of public safety and to prevent any misunderstanding among the public.
Syed Lot noted that no police report had been made by the individuals directly involved in the brawl, but that a 45-second video of the incident had gone viral on Facebook.
He said police had opened an investigation paper under Section 147 of the Penal Code for the offence of rioting, and that efforts to identify and locate those involved were actively ongoing.
He also advised the public not to engage in any behaviour that could disturb public order and to always abide by the law.
