QuickCheck: Is a ‘pet grooming’ scam targeting animal lovers and draining their bank accounts?

SEVERAL social media users claim their bank accounts were drained after downloading an app for "pet grooming" services. Is this true?

VERDICT:

TRUE

In a statement, the Royal Malaysia Police alerted the public to the latest online scam that fleece victims through downloads of unknown APK via links on social media.

The police said that the Amaran Scam site had highlighted that the latest tactic involved offering cheap pet grooming services.

Those who enquired about the service would be asked to download an APK and install a third-party app, which would then ask them for their banking details.

The scammers would use this data to empty out the accounts of victims.

The police, Amaran Scam and Bank Negara urged the public not to be taken in by such services and to only download apps from official sources.

The police also said that any information on such scams can be channeled to the National Financial Crime Prevention Centre at 03-8861 3830, the police hotline at 03-2610 1222 or Bank Negara's hotline at 1-300-88-5465.
