QuickCheck: Have Singaporeans been victims of crime in Johor since the border reopened?

A SINGAPORE portal has claimed that visitors from the island nation to Johor have been victims of numerous 'crimes' since the border reopened. Is this true?

Verdict:

FALSE

According to Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat, no Singaporeans have been victims of any crime in Johor since the border reopening.

The Johor police chief rubbished the report that listed seven places in Johor Baru as being unsafe and best avoided when travelling there.

"When the borders reopened on April 1, I stationed 1,600 personnel and officers at 41 known major public areas throughout Johor to safeguard the people, including foreign travellers.

"So far, not a single foreign traveller who has visited Johor has lodged a report with the police saying they have been a crime victim," he said in a press conference at the state police headquarters here Thursday (June 2).

The police chief added that the only crime so far involving Singaporeans was a couple who were arrested following a domestic dispute in Taman Mount Austin.

On Tuesday (May 31) a 29-year-old Singaporean woman was stabbed in the right buttock by her 34-year-old boyfriend, who was also from the republic.

"The couple were renting a unit at the apartment for a few days. However, they got into a heated argument and the male suspect then stabbed his girlfriend.

"Both tested positive for drugs,” he said, adding that the couple have since been charged in court.
